1. If it's only a minor offense, why did 2 or 3 other officers show up?: Officers in the vicinity frequently back each other up without being summoned. This is a protocol that maximizes safety for the officer.

2. Why did the officer sit in the police car for so long? What are they doing?: Most Ashland Police Department cruisers are equipped with a mobile computer that allows the officer to verify that your driver's license status is valid. This process, although comparatively fast, could take a few minutes.

3. What if I don't agree with the ticket?: All citizens have the right to an appeal before a Clerk Magistrate. Follow the directions on the back of the citation. Criminal citations may be appealed to the:

4. What if I don't like the officer's demeanor?: An officer's demeanor is a difficult characteristic to measure relative to how it is delivered and received. Our police department is committed to positive citizen contact and proper conduct. If you feel that the officer's demeanor was improper, our department has an internal affairs system to investigate such claims.

5. How will the citation affect my insurance?: This is determined by the Merit Rating Board. Contact your insurance company for further information.

1. What information is available about sex offenders?: Information is available free of charge from the Police Department or the Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry Board to individuals requesting it. The Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry Board prohibits the Ashland Police Department or any department from disseminating any information about a sex offender who has not been classified a Level 1, 2, or 3. The Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry Board also prohibits the police department from providing information regarding a Level 1 sex offender.

2. Who can obtain information about sex offenders?: Any person 18 years of age or older may obtain information regarding sex offenders. You must appear in person to the Police Department and fill out the proper requests forms. Your request for information will be obtain within the Records Department for 1 year. The information is confidential and will not be distributed.

3. How can I register as an offender?: Offenders can pick up a blue registration card at The Ashland Police Department any time day or night. The form must be completed and mailed back to the Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry Board.

4. How can I register as a classified offender?: A classified offender can register at the Ashland Police Department at any time day or night. The Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry Board requires law enforcement agencies to photograph and fingerprint classified offenders. Photographs and fingerprints are taken between Monday - Friday between 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. Please call ahead.
